Many years ago, as a mum of three, I tried my best to help my children with their school work. Widowed when our youngest was nine , it wasn’t easy on my own. What made it even more difficult was the fact that, although I was a registered childminder, I knew very little about teaching , learning or psychology .
I started working at a local boys school and also a girls school. This enabled me to take a one year course in Dyslexia and also introduced me to an educational psychologist. I was fascinated by her teaching techniques, so read my way through dozens of books on the subject, travelled to California to expand my knowledge and completed a Practioner and a Masters course on Modelling Excellence. I followed this up with a Psychology degree . ( It seemed to me that the Modelling Excellence gave me the “ how to fix it,” and the degree gave me ,” what and why it needed fixing.” So perhaps I did them in reverse order !)
Since then I have tutored hundreds and hundreds of children, and a few adults. High Five is the result of all of this experience. I believe that parents want the best for their children but some may not know how to help them. Some parents choose to use a tutor, ( we have sixty clients at present,) and some may prefer to tutor their own child. At High Five we are always happy to help and advise parents.
